Tips for Storing Wine
With any great home, there are entertaining rules. Yes, if you are hosting a special occasion, wine connoisseur, or just saving a few bottles to break open for a small gathering, it’s important to understand how to best store wine safely until you’re ready to enjoy. Although it might seem like common sense, please carefully follow the guidelines. Humidity, temperature, positioning & timing are a few ideas with wine storage in Maui.
Humidity
Controlling moisture in the room is important if you plan on storing bottles for more than a couple of years. Ideally, humidity for storage is between 50 to 75 percent and anything below that could cause the corks to dry out, letting air seep into the bottle.
Temperature
To ensure each wine bottle maintains the proper redolent flavor and aroma, storage at the correct temperatures are essential. Regardless if it is red, white, or sparkling, storing your bottles at 53°F to 57°F are ideal. Keeping your bottles in a room where the temperature is much warmer than that, it will most likely cause the flavor to become flat. Keep your wine in the dark and away from direct UV rays. It will ultimately protect the flavor.
Positioning
Generally, it is advised to store wine bottles on their sides. This allows the wine to stay up against the cork, which should aid in keeping it from drying out. However, if you don’t plan on storing the wine for an extended duration or if the bottle has a screw top or plastic cork, this is not required.
Timing
Not all wines are designed to have a prolonged shelf life or extensive aging. To better understand timing, make sure you know what the winemaker’s intentions are for that particular bottle and don’t be too eager to indulge.
