How it got started...
The brainchild of three childhood friends from Georgia, Down The Hatch was established in 2015 after years of the trio living in Maui and working in the service industry. Javi Bar- beri, Dave Fincher, and Julian Bonfardin immediately spotted the potential when they happened upon the restaurant which was then the Makani Kai, after previously being known as Blue Lagoon and Da Kitchen.
Its basement waterfall location was the perfect spot for their ideas to take shape, and, af- ter operating under the Makani Kai name for a while, the creatively rebranded ‘Down The Hatch’ seafood restaurant and bar was born!
Adding to its success, at the end of 2020 nationally acclaimed Maui-born Chef Alvin Savella (known throughout Maui as the ‘Kitchen Assassin’) was appointed Executive Chef for the restaurant group which also includes the neighboring Breakwall Shave Ice Co and nearby Mala Ocean Tavern.
The Location...
The restaurant is situated in the courtyard of The Wharf on Front Street, across from the Banyan Tree in Lahaina on the western lobe of Maui.
A favorite destination of those wanting to experience the island's rich historical culture, Lahaina boasts some real must-sees such as the huge banyan tree (occupying a whole city block), the old prison, and the old courthouse. Add in the eclectic mix of shops and art galleries, and this bustling port town becomes the perfect place to explore, dine and unwind.
Location
From Kahului / Maalaea /Lahaina:
Kuihelani Hwy 380 and continue straight for several miles until you see signs to Lahaina. At the lights, turn left onto Honoapiilani Hwy 30 South. You will pass Maalaea Harbor and go around the mountains towards Lahaina. The highway then takes you onto the Lahaina Bypass. Watch for signs to turn left towards La- haina Town. Take the first left & then turn right onto the lower highway.
To park, turn left on Prison Street, where there is a free parking lot on the corner of Prison Street and Front Street. Walk down Front Street towards the Banyan Tree, and Down The Hatch is located right across the street, in the open-air courtyard of The Wharf.
The Setting...
Just steps from the harbor, the downstairs tree-lined, open-air courtyard is the perfect setting for this casual seafood eatery; the atmosphere is a welcoming one. A self-dubbed modern surfer dive lounge, the place is buzzing during peak times with great live music adding to the friendly vibe. Happy Hour local favorite, too!
