About the Sport
For those who are unfamiliar, pickleball is a fun and exciting sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It's played on a smaller court with paddles and a plastic ball with holes, making it accessible for people of all ages and skill levels. The nets are also lower than a tennis net, making it a more approachable sport for beginners. The sport was invented in the mid-1960s by three dads who wanted to create a game that would keep their children entertained during summer holidays. Fast forward to today, and pickleball has become a popular activity for kids right through to seniors.
On Maui, you may also hear pickleball referred to as pukaball, because it’s played with a ball with holes, and “puka” means “hole” in Hawaiian.
